Stain, oil or paint?

Oils and stains soak into the timber and show off the grain. They need recoating more often but are easy to maintain. Solid paints and coatings sit on top, hide the grain and can last longer between coats, but they need proper preparation and can peel if moisture gets under them. We'll recommend what suits your deck and how you use it.

Preparation is everything

Grey, weathered timber needs cleaning and sanding back to fresh wood before any new finish goes on. Loose or failed old coatings must come off. Protruding nails and screws are punched or replaced so the new finish isn't scuffed off underfoot.

Safe underfoot

Wet decks and stairs can be slippery. Slip-resistant finishes are available for stairs, pool surrounds and high-traffic areas.

How often should a deck be re-oiled?

Decks in full sun often need a maintenance coat roughly every year, while shaded decks can go longer. When water stops beading on the surface, it's usually time.

Can you fix a deck where the old coating is peeling?

Usually, yes. The failed coating has to be removed first so the new finish can bond properly to the timber.

Do you paint pergolas and outdoor screens too?

Yes. Pergolas, privacy screens and outdoor structures can be done at the same time as the deck.
